American painter, printmaker and author. Awarded a fellowship to the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles at the age of 12. Went to the California School of Fine Arts 1932. BA Stanford University 1937. Studied Art History at Columbia University 1940. Editor of the Documents of Modern Arts series starting in 1944. Married to artist Helen Frankenthaler 1958-1971 and to photographer Renate Pensold 1972-1991.
