Considered the founder of the Hudson River School. Moved to the United States with his family in 1818. Studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1826 he was elected a founding member of the National Academy of Design. Spent the years 1829–32 and 1841–42 abroad, mainly in Italy.
